WOODEN BENT SHAFT
THE RUMORS ARE TRUE! WE ARE NOW RELEASING A 2-PIECE VERSION OF OUR HOLLOW WOODEN BENT SHAFT PADDLES FOR A LIMITED TIME AND LIMITED RELEASE! ORDERS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED
Not only does it have a striking look utilizing our carbon fiber ferrules, but our new 2-piece Wooden Bent Shafts have even more function to go with its great form! With it’s ability to break-down into a smaller package there is a lot more ease in travelling with your paddle, stowing it away when not in use, and also keeping it on the deck of your kayak.
If you choose, this ferrule can also be made with a feathered (60°R and 60°L) and unfeathered (0°) adjustable snap button (as shown), for those of you who like to switch depending on winds. Otherwise we can also provide whichever single feather angle you would prefer.
With full carbon fiber touring blades, carbon fiber ferrule, and the hollow yellow cedar shaft, these paddles have a very light-weight feel and balance, averaging just over 900 grams (32oz).
Using a blend of both traditional woodwork and modern composite techniques, this shaft gives the warm look and feel of an hand carved paddle, but with the added advantage of light-weight composite materials.
Make no mistake! Each shaft is truly unique, being handmade (just like all other Nimbus Paddles) and hand-carved in our shop, one by one.
These shafts are shaped from carefully selected clear-grained yellow cedar, harvested right here on the BC Coast. We then hollow out the shaft and internally reinforce the walls with light-weight carbon fiber. We also bridge each seam with carbon fiber to increase strength – which also gives it a distinct pinstripe along its entire length. A final layer of fiberglass seals the exterior for added strength and longevity.
Our entire process is helped with the use of Ecopoxy’s UVPoxy for a durable, clear, and weather resistant coating.
The shape of our wooden bent shaft was designed with comfort in mind, taking inspiration from axe hafts, mountain bike handles, and other form fitting equipment and tools. It has a subtle bend with a teardrop grip that feels natural (not neutral) in the hand. We wanted to provide paddlers with a shape that draws the hand into position with each stroke, ensuring you always know where they are in relation to the blade at all times, regardless of whether you are right side up or not!
We developed the shaft with the help of fellow paddlers on the West Coast who wanted a wooden shaft that feels natural in the hand, is tough, and light-weight, that can propel them along the rugged coastlines and passages of the Pacific Northwest. With that in mind, we already had the perfect touring blades for the job!
These paddles can be made with your your choice of carbon fiber touring blades:
The Wave Walker – an aggressive, large surfaced blade, perfect for larger paddlers, and those who spend a lot of time in rough, big water.
The Kiska – Our go-to blade for most touring paddlers and styles, it is at home in most conditions, whether that be calm water or rough seas.
The Kiska G – A larger variation of the Kiska suited for a larger paddler who is looking to put a bit more power behind each stroke.
