WOODEN BENT SHAFT
THE RUMORS ARE TRUE! WE ARE INTRODUCING A NEW STYLE OF PADDLE TO OUR LINEUP FOR A LIMITED TIME AND LIMITED RELEASE!
This past year we have been listening to input from paddlers to see if we could come up with a fresh take on a sea kayak paddle worthy of big waters, which can perform gracefully through the deep ocean currents and surf that surround us in the Pacific Northwest. Using a blend of traditional wood carving methods and modern composites, we believe this kayak paddle answers that call.
Using a blend of both traditional woodwork and modern composite techniques, this shaft gives the warm look and feel of an hand carved paddle, but with the added advantage of light-weight composite materials.
Make no mistake! Each shaft is truly unique, being handmade (just like all other Nimbus Paddles) and hand-carved in our shop, one by one.
These shafts are shaped from carefully selected clear-grained yellow cedar, harvested right here on the BC Coast. We then hollow out the shaft and internally reinforce the walls with light-weight carbon fiber. We also bridge each seam with carbon fiber to increase strength – which also gives it a distinct pinstripe along its entire length. A final layer of fiberglass seals the exterior for added strength and longevity.
Our entire process is helped with the use of Ecopoxy’s UVPoxy for a durable, clear, and weather resistant coating.
The shape of our wooden bent shaft was designed with comfort in mind, taking inspiration from axe hafts, mountain bike handles, rifle stocks, and other form fitting equipment and tools. It has a subtle bend with a teardrop grip that feels natural (not neutral) in the hand. We wanted to provide paddlers with a shape that draws the hand into position with each stroke, ensuring you always know where they are in relation to the blade at all times, regardless of whether you are right side up or not!
We developed the shaft with the help of fellow paddlers on the West Coast who wanted a single-piece wooden shaft, that feels natural in the hand, is tough, and light-weight, that can propel them through the turbulent coastlines and passages of the Pacific Northwest. With that in mind, we already had the perfect blade for the job!
These paddles will be made with our tried and tested Wave Walker. It is our touring sea kayak blade, with a huge power-face to really dig deep with every stroke. Its aggressive shape and size was made with rough waters in mind.
One difference that will be exclusive to this paddle is that these blades will have an additional layer of reinforcement to provide extra strength to the light-weight carbon fiber exterior.
WE MEAN LIMITED! THIS FIRST RELEASE WILL ONLY CONSIST OF TEN (10) PADDLES!
These paddles truly are handmade, and require a lot of time to create. We will only be making them in small batches for limited release, and will only continue to release more in the future if this first run is successful! So don’t miss your chance to own a truly unique paddle!
